Hello! I'm Claire Baker MBACP

Professional Counsellor And Life Traveller

An Introduction to Claire Baker Counselling

I have created Claire Baker Counselling to provide experienced counselling and therapy services, accessible to all adults. http://www.cebcounselling.com is my website name. I provide a range of counselling and therapy services from private premises in Ashtead, Surrey.

My counselling training was in Relationship Psychology.  It is a ‘systemic integrative psychotherapeutic model’ which in basic terms means that the relationship between the counsellor and the client is at the core of the work undertaken.  This enables clients to gain insight into patterns of thoughts, actions and emotions that may be affecting the way they live today.

How I Work

We are all so different and our experiences vary, so there is not a fixed way of working that’s right for everybody.  Being an integrative counsellor means that I can work with a wide range of issues and use a number of different psychological theories to inform the work I do with my clients – for example, humanistic, existential or psychodynamic.

Find out more about how I can help you by reading my website. You may find that the testimonials from clients offer a helpful and important insight into the results of my practice.

I approached Claire for counselling support when I was going through a particularly difficult and upsetting time.  Claire immediately put me at ease and provided a safe, confidential space to talk through, make sense of and process what I was going through at the time.  Throughout our sessions, Claire was incredibly approachable, warm and caring.  I felt that she really listened to me and responded in a compassionate way that enabled me to fully trust her with my situation.  I found the sessions invaluable, they enabled me to move on and I am forever grateful to Claire for the support she provided me with during this time.  I have no hesitation in recommending her counselling services.

Claire’s unwavering support, empathetic listening and insightful perspectives have been invaluable on my journey towards healing and a better understanding of myself. She fostered a space where I felt heard and understood. Claire has made a profound impact, and I’m truly grateful for all she has done for me.

Through each session, I grew to trust Claire. She showed me empathy and really listened. This allowed me to come out of my shell, be vulnerable and truly reveal myself. For the first time in a long while, I felt seen!
I will forever be grateful for my time with her as she has given me the courage to recognise my patterns and now, I’m working towards changing my life for the better…thank you!

Voluntary Work

Prior to training as a counsellor, I volunteered on the Samaritans helpline (including long night shifts), listening to people who were struggling, lonely and often suicidal. The Samaritans training and work experience has been invaluable in my counselling practice.

For over three years, I have volunteered at the YMCA St Paul’s Group counselling service – providing low cost counselling to community clients, as well as free counselling to the clients living in the hostels. I provide a mix of short term (6-12 weeks) and long-term therapy (up to 12 months), giving me a varied workload and the opportunity to work deeper with some clients.

As an experienced counsellor for the YMCA, I talk with people on the phone to assess their situation and accessibility into the service, needing to establish a rapport quickly.  I work closely with the management team to review risk and any safeguarding concerns.  I continue to volunteer as I enjoy being part of a team and accessing the ongoing learning opportunities to enhance my practice as a counsellor.

My Journey To Becoming A Counsellor in Surrey

I have always worked in the health and charity sectors, but behind a desk! Organising doctors, working collaboratively with a range of healthcare professionals and managing many projects – I do love a list!

However, now I feel where I should be – working directly with people to help on a personal level.  I initially dipped my toe in the waters professionally about 8 years ago and have never looked back –  it’s been quite a journey of highs and lows!

Personally I have experienced counselling at different times in my life – sometimes useful, sometimes not, but the most important lesson I have learnt is that the relationship is key.

My Self Care

Self care for clients and counsellors alike is a must.  One of the things I love the most is taking my two dogs for a country walk, in Surrey or further afield, enjoying the scenery and stopping off at a pub for half a pint of cider and a packet of crisps! My family and friends are invited too!  I love to escape to the theatre and I am grateful there are many good theatres within easy distance.

Having been lucky enough to witness my Mum as a dab hand in the garden, I have taken on her passion and love to potter and enjoy my outdoor space – you will see my love for tulips on my website. They are after all, a symbol of spring, new life and beginnings.
